Stock Market Today: September 25, 2020

09/25/2020 To this point, at least, September has lived up to its reputation as a difficult month for investors. Thus,  after a short-lived two-day advance to start the 30-day span, Wall Street has spent the following three weeks heading notably lower, with the past several days being especially trying, with declines of over 500 points in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday and Wednesday alone. Then, yesterday morning, the stock market fell further initially, with the Dow dropping by more than 200 points.

Stock Market Today: September 16, 2020

09/16/2020 Wall Street, which endured one of its worst weeks in months in the post-Labor-Day span, began the current five-day period on a strong up note on Monday and continued that comeback yesterday morning and into the early afternoon. Solid economic fundamentals and additional gains in the technology space combined to push the stock market nicely higher. In all, the Dow Jones Industrial Average quickly moved out to a gain just north of 235 points within the first few minutes of trading and retained much of that uptick throughout the first half of the session.

Stock Market Today: September 4, 2020

09/04/2020 Wall Street opened for trading yesterday morning on a generally lower note, with a sharp retreat in an overbought NASDAQ Composite leading the way lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened slightly to the upside, meantime, as buying was continuing for a second straight day in some of the more depressed blue chip issues. This soft overall performance followed a bevy of early economic reports and preceded this morning's just-released issuances on employment and unemployment. As has been the case recently, the Thursday releases seemed to have little effect on equity market activity.

Stock Market Today: August 4, 2020

08/04/2020 The U.S. stock market moved nicely higher yesterday, starting the new week on Wall Street on an upbeat note. Overnight, the international markets managed to make some progress. In Asia, the Nikkei put in a strong session, while in Europe, the FTSE 100 delivered a less impressive performance. On our shores, though, the equity futures are pointing to a softer opening.

Stock Market Today: July 24, 2020

07/24/2020 A sobering economicreport showing an increase in weekly level of new jobless filings, the tepid increase in the Leading Economic Indicators, and of course, the fast-spreading COVID-19 pandemic, were only slightly mitigated by relatively decent earnings results to date, causing the major market averages to close Thursday’s session in the red. Looking out to the new day and after slight gains in the futures last evening, we see that the equity futures are suggesting a lower opening this morning.

Stock Market Today: July 23, 2020

07/23/2020 The stock market, which continued its winning ways to start this week, with moderate improvement on Monday and Tuesday, ended the middle session of the week on an up note. A good existing home sales report and news surrounding a COVID-19 vaccine helped booststocks. Too, some positive earnings reports and following the reasonably positive performance by the equity market yesterday, the futures are now pointing to a further uptick when stocks open this morning.

Stock Market Today: July 9, 2020

07/09/2020 The stock market seems to be balancing the positives of an improving economy with the negatives borne of a rapid surge in COVID-19 cases across more than 30 states. Meanwhile, the equity market appears set to open the session with modest upward bias, as the Street seeks to make it three out of four days this trading week with gains.

Stock Market Today: May 11, 2020

05/11/2020 The major U.S. equity indexes pushed forward last week, even in the face of some terrible news on both the earnings and economic fronts, particularly the latter, which saw an historic jump in the nation’s unemployment rate. Our sense is that a good deal of the dismal economic data have already been factored into valuations, and investors are now looking ahead with an eye on when the U.S. economy is going to be open for business.

Earnings Season

02/24/2020 Earnings season is the four times a year, celebrated several-week stretch from early January to early February, from early April to early May, from early July to early August, and from early October to early November in which the vast majority of the nation's corporations report their quarter's sales and earnings--hence the name  earnings season.
