Stock Market Today: July 10, 2020

07/10/2020 It certainly has been an up-and-down week for Wall Street, as we head into the final session of this five-day span. On point, stocks started the week out on a high note, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average soaring by more than 400 points on Monday. That index then proceeded to tumble by almost as many points on Tuesday, before equity investors righted the ship on Wednesday with a late surge helping to lift the blue chips and the NASDAQ strongly.

Stock Market Today: July 9, 2020

07/09/2020 The stock market seems to be balancing the positives of an improving economy with the negatives borne of a rapid surge in COVID-19 cases across more than 30 states. Meanwhile, the equity market appears set to open the session with modest upward bias, as the Street seeks to make it three out of four days this trading week with gains.

Stock Market Today: July 8, 2020

07/08/2020 Stocks began the first full week of the third quarter on Monday with additional gains. But, the Dow would give back almost as many points yesterday (397) as it had gained on Monday (439). The S&P 500 Index also would fall back, losing 34 points, while the NASDAQ, up for most of the session, would conclude with a 90-point deficit. It would seem for one day at least that worries on the COVID-19 front would outdo optimism on the economy and its recent comeback. Looking out to a new day now, the equity futures seem poised to begin the middle session of the week in uncertain fashion.

Stock Market Today: July 7, 2020

07/07/2020 The U.S. stock market staged a solid advance yesterday, as traders returned from the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Overnight, the international markets have weakened somewhat. And the equity futures are pointing to a soft opening on our shores. Overall, sentiment on Wall Street remains upbeat, despite a good deal of uncertainty. For one, the coronavirus still poses considerable public health risks, and a medical treatment has yet to be found.

Stock Market Today: July 6, 2020

07/06/2020 The investment community will return this week from a long holiday weekend as the U.S. equity and bond markets were closed on Friday in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The mood on Wall Street improved last week, with sentiment helped by some encouraging reports on the U.S. economy. A better-than-expected jobs report for the month of June, as well as an encouraging reading on consumer confidence gave equities a boost even with lingering worries about a resurgence of coronavirus cases in several states that aggressively opened their economies.

Stock Market Today: July 2, 2020

07/02/2020 Yesterday, stocks came out of the gate going immediately to the upside following some choppy trading in the pre-market, to start the third quarter. Still, the major market averages closed the day on a mixed note. This morning, the Labor Department’s non-farm payrolls release reported that the nation added a larger-than-expected 4.8 million jobs in June. Looking ahead to today’s session, the equity futures, already up sharply in the pre-market have gained further, setting up a strong opening in a few minutes.

Stock Market Today: July 1, 2020

07/01/2020 The second quarter concluded yesterday, and what a three-month stretch it was. On point, after a woeful first three months, which had been severely impacted by the fast-spreading coronavirus, the stock market righted itself from April through June, securing the best quarterly performance since 1987 for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. For the NASDAQ, it was the finest showing since 1999, or before the dot.com bubble of 2001 burst, with that composite soaring above 10,000 for the first time ever.

Stock Market Today: June 30, 2020

06/30/2020 U.S. stocks began the holiday-shortened trading week with a sharp move higher. Strong housing data helped kick start the day into high gear. This good news was enough to outweigh concerns over COVID-19 flare-ups in several states, which forced local governments to put reopening plans on hold, or even take a few steps back. As we look to the new day, U.S. stock futures are suggesting the major indexes will open with a modest decline.

Stock Market Today: June 29, 2020

06/29/2020 As we are set to begin the penultimate trading day of June, the main theme on Wall Street this month has been the return of volatility to the market. Recall that the 30-day stretch started on an upbeat note, with optimism that the U.S. economy was reopening across the country and a much better-than-expected employment and unemployment data for the month of May pushing equities higher.
