02/26/2019 The marketstarted trading lower today, owing to reports of weaker-than-expected earnings from a few names, including Dow-30 component Home Depot.  Additionally, mixed economic news did not inspire investors. Though trading throughout the rest of session was a bit choppy, much of the final portion of the day occurred in a largely sideways fashion. Stock Market Today: January 29, 2019

01/29/2019 The stock market started the day modestly higher, as some decent earnings reports boosted investor confidence. Indeed, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by almost 150 points at its apex, while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ were higher in tandem. However, the markets started to selectively fall, as fears about the likelihood of a trade deal with China crept in. These concerns appeared to be short lived, and the markets bounced in the final portion of the trading session. Stock Market Today: January 22, 2019

01/22/2019 The U.S. markets started lower today, as fears about a global slowdown increased. This was partially caused by the IMF cutting its 2019 global growth forecast. The indices trended downward throughout early trading, as existing home sales in December were far weaker than expected. The move lower continued throughout the afternoon, as a news story broke that the U.S. had cancelled a trade meeting with China. That increased fears about the possibility of a deal with that country. All told, the Dow finished the day lower by just about 302 points, while the S&P 500 was off by 38 points, and the NASDAQ fell 137 points.

Stock Market Today: January 10, 2019

01/10/2019 The market started the day lower, as a lack of details concerning the possibility of an eventual trade deal with China spooked the markets. Follow through occurred early in trading, as several retailers put out preliminary results concerning the Christmas selling season, which underwhelmed the Street. However, the markets turned around quickly, as focus turned to U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Powell’s speech, he stated that the Fed would be “patient” and would see how the economic backdrop unfolds when determining policy. Still, he claimed that the Fed balance sheet will be “substantially smaller” in the future. The indices trended higher, trading around breakeven levels for a while near midday, before a final push at the end of the day. This move resulted in daily highs by the close. All told, the Dow ended higher by 123 points, the S&P 500 was up 12 points, and the NASDAQ gained 29 points.

Stock Market Today: December 13, 2018

12/13/2018 The markets started trading higher in the futures market, as news that China’s government had bought around 500,000 tons of soybeans from the United States broke. This represented the first major purchase from that country in several months, and caused investor sentiment to improve concerning a trade deal between the two countries. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by around 215 points in early market trading, while the S&P 500 added 19 points. However, sentiment trailed off during the session, and the indices made a series of lower highs and lower lows, causing the markets to give up much of the day’s gains.
