Dogs Of The Dow: 2016 in Review

01/30/2017 The Dogs of the Dow investment strategy produced market-beating returns for 2016. A Dogs of the Dow portfolio (consisting of equally weighted positions in the top 10 highest yielding Dow issues at the start of the year) would have risen 16% on the year. The advance was led by Caterpillar (CAT), which was up more than 35% in price, while Chevron (CVX) rose just over 30%, good enough for second-best among the Dogs. Meanwhile, the leading equity benchmarks also participated in the stock market’s 2016 advance, though the gains on the NASDAQ and the S&P 500 couldn’t measure up to those posted by the Dogs.

Dow 30 Earnings: Verizon Communications Fourth Quarter 2016

01/24/2017 Verizon Communications, (VZ) the telecommunications giant and Dow-30 component, reported 2016 fourth-quarter earnings of $0.86 a share, well below our estimate and three cents below the year-ago result, on a 5.6% revenue decline. And investors have certainly taken notice, with VZ stock down about 4% on the news.

05/31/2016 Stocks made some progress this morning, weakened into the mid-afternoon, but recovered considerable ground in the final hour of the session. At the end of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 86 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was off just slightly; while the NASDAQ (which bucked the downtrend for much of the day) finished ahead 15 points.
