Dogs Of The Dow: 2016 in Review

01/30/2017 The Dogs of the Dow investment strategy produced market-beating returns for 2016. A Dogs of the Dow portfolio (consisting of equally weighted positions in the top 10 highest yielding Dow issues at the start of the year) would have risen 16% on the year. The advance was led by Caterpillar (CAT), which was up more than 35% in price, while Chevron (CVX) rose just over 30%, good enough for second-best among the Dogs. Meanwhile, the leading equity benchmarks also participated in the stock market’s 2016 advance, though the gains on the NASDAQ and the S&P 500 couldn’t measure up to those posted by the Dogs.

Stock Market Today: August 18, 2016

08/18/2016 Stocks put in a choppy performance today. Specifically, the major averages advanced in the morning, pulled back in the early afternoon, but managed to finish the day in positive territory, with a late buying rush. At the end of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 24 points; the S&P 500 Index was up five points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 11 points. In general, it was a constructive session, as advancers easily outnumbered decliners on the NYSE.

Dow 30 Earnings: Wal-Mart Stores Fiscal Second Quarter 2016

08/18/2016 The world's largest brick and mortar retailer, Wal-Mart, (WMT) reported solid numbers for the July quarter (fiscal years end January 31st). Earnings per share of $1.07 came in toward the high end of the $0.95-$1.08 guidance range. Revenues were flat, but advanced 2.8% in constant-currency terms. This news sent the shares nearly 2% higher in early morning trading.
